Obituary for William E. Matthews

William E.  Matthews
William E. Matthews, 92, of Camp Hill, passed away on December 8, 2017 at The VA Medical Center Hospice in Lebanon.

The youngest of eight children, he was born on April 10th, 1925 in Steelton, PA to Frank K. and Frances E. (Smith) Matthews. After completing his formal education, “Bill” was briefly employed by Bethlehem Steel as a bridge crane operator before serving in the Army during World War II. Upon his discharge from the service in 1946, he was employed as a professional driver by Motor Freight Express in Harrisburg. He was a member of American Legion Post 998 in Lawnton and was an avid bowler, golfer, and pool player. Above all, he will be remembered for his kind and compassionate nature, his love of children and dogs, and his willingness to help whenever a friend needed him.

He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen M. Aston and son-in-law, Jeffrey A. Aston, of Columbia, Pa; his long-time companion, Frances Sheetz of Camp Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline R. (Irvine) Matthews (1925-1966), second wife, Catherine J (Booth) Matthews (1921-2010); five brothers, Paul, John, Richard, Earl, and Frank Matthews, and two sisters, Louise Thomas and Marie Wagenheim.

A visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St, Camp Hill, followed by A Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 A.M. at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3435 Trindle Rd, Camp Hill. Burial with full Military honors will be private and held at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Research Hospital.
