Obituary for John L. Mattis
John L. Mattis, 86, of Camp Hill, PA, passed away suddenly Monday, January 1, 2018, at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born October 3, 1931, in Elizabethville, PA, to the late Paul and Geraldine (Walter) Mattis.
A year after graduating from Elizabethville High School, John joined the United States Marine Corps in November 1950 where he later fought in the Korean War. After proudly serving his country, he became a truck driver before beginning a long career as a driver for Greyhound bus lines, from which he retired in 1990 after 26 years of faithful service.
Over the years John enjoyed spending time at deer camp, playing Euchre with his buddies, and watching his favorite sports on television. John was also active in the Elizabethville VFW and American Legion posts. Later in life John looked forward to petsitting his 3 granddogs, Clifton, Marty and Gus.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother Lt. Robert E. Mattis.
He is survived by a brother Karl Mattis of Elizabethville and a sister Sally Searfass of Allentown.
John is also survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores (Katcher) Mattis of Camp Hill, PA; two sons Robert Mattis, and wife Carole Ann, of Harrisburg, PA, and David Mattis, of Camp Hill, PA; two daughters, Angela Matthews and husband Thomas, of Clearwater, FL., and Julie Donahoe and husband Jeffrey, of York Springs, PA. Also surviving are John’s three grandchildren, Michael and Nicholas Mattis, and Jesse Donahoe.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Monday, January 8, 2017, in the Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market Street, Camp Hill, PA, with Father Benedict Faneye officiating. A viewing will be held in the funeral home on Monday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service. Burial with Military honors will follow the service at 2:00 P.M. at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, PA.
